Our Story

We grew up in rural Minnesota in an old colonial style farm house that was built in 1901. When our parents bought the house it hadn't been updated since the early 60s. For the next few years, they worked steadily updating the kitchen, adding lighting and new flooring and paint throughout. Our mom sewed curtains and pillow covers, refinished old furniture and painted to make our house into the most beautiful, welcoming place that we called home.  As kids, this really made a lasting impression watching them turn something that was old and almost forgotten, into a home that we made so many memories with friends and family.

We eventually moved to Michigan because of a job change. While we were settling into a new life in Metro Detroit, we lived in a small rental house in Beverly Hills. Coming from a rambling farmhouse to this new city life, was a massive change. Once again, our mom made this space feel like home while working within the parameters of a rental home.

It was around this time that both of us realized that its not about having a blank slate to start creating your own space, but rather working with what you have, and adding to it or changing small things to make it feel like your own personal space. We both went our separate ways as adults, and started taking what we had seen and learned from our parents and applying it to our own spaces.

Over the last few years, we had both been helping friends and family decorate and recreate their spaces.  We loved the process, and started asking ourselves "Why not do this for anyone?". The idea was born. White Slate Design.

A little bit about Kimberly now...

I'm a mom to three beautiful crazy boys, Sylvain, Marcel, & Eero, and about 100 plant babies. I love love love plants. When i'm not juggling mommy duties, you will most likely find me tackling a "project". Whether it's refinishing furniture or coming up with ideas to create functional spaces, I love to be surrounded with beauty and chaos.

A little bit about Hannah now...

I am Clement's mom by day, and a creative weirdo by naptime. If I'm not behind a computer creating, I'm going to be outdoors tinkering in my garden, or in my kitchen whipping up some sort of foreign cuisine.
